White Lace & Promises

This quilt celebrates married life as a patchwork of promises, occasions and serendipity. The title refers to the song of the same name by 'The Carpenters'.

Three versions have been created

White Lace and Promises I
100 x 150cm
for my Son and Daughter-in-law

White Lace and Promises II
70 x 120cm
for my friend and new husband

White Lace and Promises III
70 x 120cm
for the Quilt Museum at York

White Lace & Promises

Almost everything used in the making of this quilt is recycled, because in real life things never seem to start from completely brand new. Materials with a previous existence are imbued with extra meanings. The white lace is from my own wedding dress, made by my mother in 1969.

The ‘strings’ looped into the quilt’s surface are offcuts from a tennis racquet shop, and represent the idea of constraints combined with fun. The fabrics used are mostly hand dyed using procion, and printed with thermofax screens using fabric inks and discharge paste. The quilting is done both by machine and by hand.
