Shattered Glass Diptych

Size A: 130 x 90cm
Size B: 20 x 90cm

This is a complex quilted hanging in two parts A (the larger) and B (the smaller).

A and B are both reversible, one side mostly green and one side coloured.

I painted, collaged and stitched two still life pictures of bottles. I then cut them up and sewed them together again with patchwork strips between, symbolically shattering them.

I made three different intermediate pieces of quilted patchwork with designs representing shards of broken glass. I also made a large section of faux chenille fabric incorporating nylon netting, which is a scratchy fabric and so represented the sharp edges of broken glass. All four of these fabrics were in soft green colours, like recycled glass.

These intermediate patchwork pieces were used to design the first, green side of both parts A and B of the diptych. The larger part A is about the shattered glass, but the smaller part B depicts whole bottles and vessels. The work was designed to be felt for surface texture as well as being looked at.

The second, coloured, side of the diptych was developed by appliquéing various bottles, jugs and vases in bright colours onto the reverse of the original, green side. I then put one extra, coloured jug onto the front of the green side, for an interesting contrast.
