Broadband

Broadband is a collection of garments and accessories made from recycled materials on the theme of electronic conversations. It consists of two major garments, the Keyboard Coat and the Dial-Up Dress. There are also various accessories; a Handset Bag, Email Earrings, scarf, hat and necklaces.

The materials for this collection came from discarded keyboards, computers, telephones, printers, data cables and floppy disks, which I dismantled.

I incorporated components from these into my designs wherever possible; computer cable instead of traditional boning, data cable rubber casing for decorative lines and keyboard letters as accent marks.

The dial-Up Dress fabric was an old sheet screen printed using the ‘Vilene’ protective circles from inside discarded floppy disks.

The other fabrics I have used were also recycled. They were old velvet curtains and a tablecloth before being dyed and screen printed into colourful and intricate patterns chosen to deliver the Broadband idea.

The screens used were thermoplastic, derived from computer manipulations of my photographs of the recycled keyboards and telephones.
