Rosemary Hufton is a mixed media artist whose work is constructed from recycled, reclaimed, vintage and surplus materials.
She has a profound connection with these resources, which include rescued, surplus and re-purposed fabrics and also old plastic bags. These materials are frequently used out of their normal context, but they retain a residue of their normal place or use, giving her work a story beyond the obvious.
Parts of deconstructed gadgets, electronic machinery and discarded objects are used, with inspiration often taken directly from their shapes. Rosemary likes to make sculptural pieces and often laminates plastic bags, recycles wires and uses sea-worn ropes, employing hand-knitting and basketry techniques.
Rosemary founded the Grace Barrand Design Centre. This was a Craft Council recognised gallery, teaching studio, shop and café, inspired by the talented work from many artist craftsmen in diverse disciplines. After twelve years of trading, GBDC has now permanently closed its doors.
