Tidal Pools

Approx 98cm W x 63cm H

Shallow pools of seawater with colonies of red starfish were my inspiration. Rippled sand and surface reflections add to the gentle rhythm of the sea in the pools.

Cotton backed viscose was dyed and discharged before being appliquéd with dyed silk noil. This gave the effect of the patterned water surface.

This was subsequently quilted to an old woollen blanket before felting the combination by hot washing. This process gives the sand-like ripples.

The starfish are all individuals, loosely based on the ones I saw, and sewn using different fabrics, stitches and embellishments.
